MY RIDEWITHMEHENRY trip to celebrrate 70th birthday...

Ok, You know I’m an old fart…will be 70 in fact on Saturday, June 15th. Therefore I shall celebrate with some kind of train riding day…but which trip should it be? Help choose and join us. It could be the 7:12AM NJT from Denville and go to Greenport on the LIRR…great trip, a little over an hour at Greenport to eat, take a quick peek at the whaling museum and or the railroad museum plus watch the Shelter Island ferries load and unload for the trips across the bay. Back in NYP by 4PM, Denville by 6:45PM.

Have found that the new LIRR summer schedule to Montauk has a 2 and a half hour layover rather than less than 60 minutes from 12:53PM to 3:30PM for the first time giving us a fair chance of exploring the tip of the Isle a little. No connecting bus at the station, have an inquiry in to the CofC as to what can be done. Leave same time in the morning from Binghamton and Denville, but a little later from Penn Sta. and back to Denville just before 9PM. Still the same price though. Will see what happens.

NJT does is not providing good connecting schedules to Bay Head from either Port Jervis or Denville that day…the 8:49 out of PJ shows a connection at Sec. Jct. but is often missed so not worth gambling on…

Or we could go north on MNRR out of GCT to Poughkeepsie, Danbury or Waterbury that day…we just did Wassaic a few months ago and there is bustitution there now anyway.

All I can say, Henry, is that you’re a much younger man than I am and a lot better looking. (I am 73). Happy Birthday.

Well happy birthday Henry! And many more to you!

Thank you. But I disagree about the looks…all the ladies think I’m closer to approaching 60 instead of 70. Until they find out I have no money that is.

Have checked through schedules and prices and conveniences and detremined that my wish for the 70th Birthday trip to Montauk is not very feasable and wise for many reasons.

SOOOO…On Saturday, June 15th…let’s settle on the Greenport trip as it is less expensive, shorter time consumption, and most interesting layover. Still leave Binhamton by 4:30Am or so, still the 7:12 out of Denville arr. NYP 8:39AM and leaving on the LIRR at 9:12AM changing at Ronkonkoma and arriving Greenport at 12:02; enjoy lunch (we may even pre order from the train as I’ve done in the past), see either or both the LIRR HS museum and the Whaling museum, and the Shelter Island ferries scoot in and out with autos; lv Grnport and be back in NYP 3:59, lv 4:11P, ar Denville 5:42P, dinner, home by 11PM at the very latest. I have chosen Saturday because I hope the most number can join us as opposed to weekdays. Consider it an invite to my birthday party but you don’t have to bring a present, just your presence. Contact me by return email or to ridewithmehenry@hotmail.com.

Happy Birthday, Henry! Wish I could go on one of your trips, but I always appreciate your posts.

LION will be in Pennslyvania in July.

ROAR

Where and when…Ridewithmehenry will have a July trip and maybe you can join us…have a few subway surface lines in Brooklyn and Queens to tie up or all of the Bronx is undone…or maybe you’d like something other: we can do that, too!.

Happy Birthday from 8000 miles away

Visit and ride our light ral line

OK Here’s the deal. BroadwayLion has to make a photo journal of the birthday trip to share with the rest of us. How great would that be!

Your birtday or mine? I don’t do that many or that good at pictures…others do. But if you are talking July, I hope that means we can get together and do a trip…although hot and humid in the city, especially aboard the subways, are not reccommened as being good for one’s safety.

Henry Happy Birthday. And have many many more. Wish I’d had the time before getting off the road. Thx IGN

We’ve been doing Ridewithmehenry journeys almost monthly this past year…so, even coming up to 70 I think we can swing about 60 or more in the next 5 or more years…one is sure to fit anyone’s schedule…we’ll even work toward adapting to other’s schedules! Give us a trip idea and a date and we’ll work on it…couple things to remember: several of us have to drive 2-3 hours to get to a railhead at Port Jervis or some other NJT station Denville and west; not all schedules with match up with other schedules; weekdays have more choices and services but weekends have some unique schedules.

These trips are designed for fun; ride lines you wouldn’t ordinarily ride; some are historic (like this one being the early rail route from NYC to Boston and where the first piggy back was done); not a tourist train but real railroad operations, making connections, etc.; railroad and non railroad scenery; believe it or not, it is liesurley and relaxing.

The Ridewithmehenry 70th Birthday Celebration trip this Saturday has three of us from Binghamton, two from Dansville, PA, one from Palmerton, PA and at least one from Hackensack, NJ, possibly one from Denville to NYP only for Ridewithmehenry’s 70th Birthday ride! That means room for one or two more in my car from Binghamton (leave Kirkwood no later than 4:45AM!) then rendezvous at the Park and Ride at the Del. Water Gap, NJT lv Denville 7:12AM, ar NYP 8:39AM. LV LIRR 9:12AM, arrive Greenport 12:02PM, got menus so we can order ahead at the Sterlington Deli, see the LIRR HS museum and/or the Whaling Museum, watch the Shelter Island Ferries scurry. LV 1:11P back to NYP by 3:49P, LV NJT at 4:11P, Ar Denville 5:42P. Probably dinner at Carmines in Netcong by 6:30P.
NJT fare: Adult RT $28. OFF $12.50, LIRR Adult $54, OFF $27. [OFF=Old Fart Fare].

Hope you can make it and if we need another car out of Binghamton, all the better!!!
Let me know by return email here ASAP…or at ridewithmehenry@hotmail.com

Goodnews: LIRR Adult fare is $39.50 RT not $54!!!

Happy Birthday, Henry. Hope it is your best RWMH ever!!

Thanks, Schlimm…What is amazing is that each ride is a new adventure no matter how many time we’ve done them before…there are always new landmarks and old ones that were missed, new people joining us and those we meet on the way. We relax and enjoy…wish more could join us more often!

Happy birthday! I wish I was there on the ride. Maybe I’ll make it back to NY for the ride on your 75th.

Happy B-day Henry, although a little late.

I dunno yet, but maybe I’ll be going to NY (to meet my bosses) between July and September. As an european railfan who loves american trains (aAlco might get some credit ofr it lol), I would like to sample some US rail passenger services, wich might be quite common to every american (NYP-BOS, or NYP-ALB, or NYP-WAS for instance), but I would like to do it with somebody who knows the place well. Maybe when I get some more details it would be nice to do a trip-get together with some US fans.

Anyway, I’ve got a Google drive folder where I’m always putting the PDF schedules I’m finding in the net. If you wish, as ‘a present’, a can give you access

Mario…thank you! While we mostly concentrate on the commuter and regional lines, with enough notice ahead of time we may be able to work something out for you…even using commuter lines for some of the distances…to see as much as possible. But be prepared for culture shock…a step back a couple of decades in passenger rail compared to what you are used to!
