He’s my car in the works. I haven’t done to much with the body yet, but I am getting the inside ready for that scrap load. This is ONE big learning step in the many steps of weathering.
Sorry for the bad pictures. I am still fighting with the lighting.
The problem I see with distressing with a soldering iron is it tends to curve the top chord and ribs too. Most gons have panels bulged but the structural pieces are still fairly straight. That is a very hard thing to get right with a soldering iron. The best representations were by someone who cut out all the panels and replaced them with blastic or shim brass panels that had been hammered to bulge in the middle. A HUGE amount of work.
I will probably work on the outside this week, to make it look more rusted, maybe even give it a letter patch job. Maybe when I am done I can put it on Weekend Photo Fun. I have done a soldering iron before, and I looked ok. I doubt I will beat it up. Also, the inside is done by some rusting paint from Micheals.
I rusted the inside with a rusting agent/paint from Micheals. If you don’t have a Micheals try your local hobby/craft store. Its my first time using it. I think it came out pretty good. I will have to try it on the roof of some boxcars next. Its pretty easy to use, and its neat how you add the rusting effect and a few hours later heres some rust!!! That was done with about 3 layers.
That’s been mentioned on this and other boards, and somebody has already posted images of his Boxcar roof modeling
My local Michaels didn’t seem to carry it (the Carle Place/Garden City, NY one) - what department did you find yours in, as if I can narrow it down maybe then the sales staff can help me find it…
My wife found it at the glue section, which is near the unfinsihed wood at my Micheals. She thought I could use it. I metioned it before to her, and have seen other weathers us it.
Hmm, I was in those kinds of sections (well I was every section actually a few days ago, except for the 1/3 of the store now dedicated to Christmas crafts), and didn’t find it.
Then again, they don’t carry casting & mold materials there either - sometimes it seems they don’t carry much more than picture frames, foam shapes, dried plants, and scrapbooking stuff in their giant store…
