We are currently building a house, well really it’s a 28x48 modular on a foundation, ie BASEMENT. Before we even dug the foundation she had this master plan that allowed for my Harely/Train room, ie my “Fortress of Solitude”, her Tattoo/Crafts room, storage, utility, bathroom and family room.
Well I was trying to figure out what my space was going to be and how I wanted design my layout and I made one tiny suggestion about getting a bit more space, it was just an extra 1.5’ where a closet should be. And she says, if was up to you you’d have the entire basement running trains. LOL, I messaged her back and said, " Did you just say I could have the entire basement?" [}:)]LOL Ohhhh, only in my dreams, well, maybe half the basement, I still need room for my Harley’s and her tattoo shop shooooooot!!![C):-)]
Oh so in the midst of all this she says, you know I’m going to get on that MRR board you’re alwasys telling me about and create a post for all the poor wifes (with few exceptions in here) that have to put up with, to put it lightly, us train nuts. LMAO!!![(-D] I thought that was funniest thing, but in truth, it probably wouldnt’ hurt. LOL
Just wanted to post something to try and break the ice in this place before we all freeze to death. Can’t we all just get along?[swg]
My wife has a dream house of 1800 sq. ft. Her rational - she doesn’t want to clean any more than that. I want a 10,000 sq. ft. basement. I told her I had it figured out. We could build a pyramid. She didn’t laugh. Just remember you can be right or you can be happy. Take your choice.
You are a lucky man there altoonarailroader, in my house i have to run the trains and do the tattoos, must be nice! and i am lucky because if we ever sell the condo and get a real house i think my wife has already given up the whole bastment!LOL.
My wife and I came to an agreement. Each of us would use one half of the two-car garage. She wanted to keep her vehicle under cover, and I wanted space to build a layout bigger than the 16" x 96" module I’d been living with. (The beat up old pickup is an outdoor dog.)
After several months of watching me try to cram ten pounds of druthers into five pounds of givens, she very calmly informed me that she would be parking on the apron next to the truck, and that I could have the entire garage for a railroad room.
Anybody want to know why we’ve been married for 47 years?
Our new house is being built now. It has a 14X28 room off of the rec room downstairs that is set aside for my layout. My wife says I have 2 years to get something going or she’ll annex it for additional game room space! She keeps joking that the budget for those two years may not be enough to purchase lumber and that she’ll get it by default!
I’ve got about a year and a half to plan the layout before that though, I’m stationed elsewhere while she’ll be in the new house. I wonder what her expression would be if I showed up back home with all my belongings including a sizable amount of benchwork lumber in the back of a U Haul?
My wife says that if I buy one more train she’ll divorce me. I’ll sure miss her!!
Seriously, except for the laundry, I have what little space that is available in the basement. When we move to a permanent retirement place in two years or so, the laundry will be upstairs and I’ll have the whole basement!! Sure do love that gal!![angel]

***ROTFLMBO…[(-D]…Thanks, I needed that!
Lately, I have been thinking that since we no longer breed horses and don’t need ALL those stalls in both barns, I could pull some of the well seasoned wood (used as dividers between stalls) to build the framework for my future layout. It’s all 2"x6" lumber, which could be cut down as required. Perfectly strait, no warping on any of it. Time will tell.
Believe it or not ,my wife actually got me into trains.I had an old Marx train from when I was very young. We put that around the Christmas tree once I got it running and one thing lead to another. Now she actually plans our vacations to go where there is trains.I even got a job at Strasburg Railroad working on the steamers and she has no gripe about it.I got lucky and got a wonderful wife.We are even thinking of adding on to our house just so I can have a bigger basement.Since we go to Horseshoe curve 2-3 times a year,I wanna model an ho layout of that area.
See my post on the help with girlfriend thread LOL! (well, looks like she has her interests-just do some compromising & hopefully everything will work out. (GOOD LUCK THOUGH!)
My wife of going on 11 years has always been totally supportive of my train interest. She’s the one responsible for me taking one last shot at having a real layout. She saw me drooling over the Kato Super Chiefs, and said “go ahead…you know you want to”. For some time now I’ve had a little temporary twice around set up on the diningroom table. Last week it got wiped out in a weird kittie disease attack, So yesterday I went ahead and finished dismantling it. When she saw me taking it down, she was bummed.
Sounds like some of you have the love of a VERY fine women. My wife is very understanding of all of my hobbies and I of hers, but I really think she’s under estimating just how much space I’m willing to weasel out of her. [}:)]LOL
Perfect example is that once our family room is completed downstairs I am going to put my dad’s 50’s American Flyer train up on one of those shelf layouts you see around in some resturants and bars where the train runs around the top of the room and through the walls. It’s going to be a double track and run two AF trains in opposite directions…they’ll probably make a pass through her tattoo shop also. LOL Oh, and this is all in addition to my HO layout I’ll have in the Fortress of Solitude. Wish me luck!!!
Thanks everyone for your great comments, I think I might have even brought some lurkers out of the dark to jump on this discussion. Ya’ll have a good one.
I have the whole basement if I want it, minus the laundry room and her work out area. At first I planned to use all of it but soon realized I was in way over my head trying to build something that big with very little experience so I downsized the layout. Talking to people here I found out most people build more then one layout in their life time so the one I’m building now is just for experience. Layout #2 is already in the planning stage as I feel I’ve gained enough experience with my first one.
I married a red-head, but after 13 years I am not near as afraid of her temper as I once was. LOL If you get half I wouldn’t push it. Say did you happen to see the CN run through power across Horseshoe Curve last Sunday afternoon, a site that didn’t expected see.
No, I’m afraid I missed that CN run last weekend. I don’t live up on the Horseshoe Curve road anymore and I’m not in any railfanning circles to know when that kind of thing is going on.
