Mystery Passenger Train

I saw an inetesting Passenger train the other. here in Jackson MS the only regular passenger train we have is Amtraks Chicago/New Orleans “City of New Orleans” . It arrives as train #59 south to New Orleans at 11:20 a.m. It returns as train 58 north to Chicago at 4:55 p.m. All of this on CN or shared CN/BNSF trackage north and south in and out of town (former IC)

At 5:00 a.m. the other day, headed east on KCS trackage headed to the KCs/CN intermodal yard in Rankin County i saw a really long passenger. Pulled by 2 Amtrak diesels, a baggage car and about 15 coaches among them several diners and domes with an observation bringing up the rear. All the cars were the former American Orient Express (Creame trimmed in Blue) no steam pipes but full modern electrical connections between the cars. Motive power was P 40’s or 42’s in traditional Amtrak livery. I was lucky enough to catch it agin going west a few days later.

Anybody know what this train is. Some kind of tour or excursion?

The American Orient Express is now known as:

GrandLuxe Rail Journeys.

This would have been their Antebellum South trip from New Orleans to Washington, DC

He nailed it. Don’t you wish all train I.D.'s were this easy? [:P] - a. s.

Hey, thanks. I hadn’t realized that they were running east of the Mississippi again. I caught the American Orient Express coming through Opelika in 2004 by accident, and never had another shot at it.

It was through your neck of the woods around 6am this morning headed east. They’re running with NS numbers 017/018. The next one will be through GA/AL next Thursday westbound.
