I have never used an Atlas turnout but the new # 10 look good. I want to try a couple to see how they perform. I use Peco electrofrogs cause I like the metal frog, which brings me to my question. Do Atlas turnouts have metal or plastic frogs. I have looked at lots of pics but its hard to tell. Sometime they look like metal sometimes like plastic. If they are metal then I’d like to use some # 7s also
I haven’t seen the Atlas #10’ turnout but they have a #8 Mark IV turnout that is metal. You can power it if you want. It has a small tab located on the main section that you can solder a power wire to. The Frog is nickle silver.
The Custome Line turnouts can be powered also but the tab to solder the power wire to is part of one of the ties. On these turnouts the Frog is brown but it is metal.
Atlas Super Track turnouts are like the Custom Line turnouts with a brown frog that is metal and can be powered. The difference is the Super Track turnouts use undertable switches only.
The Atlas Snap Track turnouts have plastic frogs and cannot be powered.
Atlas N scale C55 turnouts have a metal frog with an easy-to-solder-to eyelet extending to the side of the turnout. Unlike PECO, there is no mechanism to hold the points to one side or the other, so you will need a groundthrow, switch motor, or some other latching mechanism.
Thanks guys. If the turnouts are metal then I will buy them for sure and I will probably use one set of contacts on the tortoise to power the frog. Or do you really think its necessary?
