I think the guy has a legitimate complaint if the claim that trains have sat there for three days or longer is true. There is no reason the trains couldn’t be held outside the congested areas around Chicago. If Air traffic control can hold planes thousands of miles away until a slot for landing opens up the railroads ought to be able to hold trains 20 miles further away and relieve the congestion some here in the second city.

Well you’re assuming that it’s the same train.

I doubt that most non-railpeople can tell the difference. It could very well be several trains coming, waiting for a few hours and going from the area all the time

Yes but I did say if true it is legitimate. Diesels stink. I have a frined with a diesl pick up. Every time he parks he idles it for 5-10 minutes before shutting it down. It stinks within 30’ of it. I wouldn’t want that constantly either.

I can’t help but wonder what all the NIMBYs would say if we could magically transport them back fifty years and plunk them down next to the N&W line over the Blue Ridge! Anyone who would complain about a 21st Century diesel locomotive idling would go ballistic about the time an A came by, cannonading the sky, followed (after a while) by a Y pusher that rated at least four on the Richter scale and renewed the cinder storm that would have followed the 2-6-6-4 by a couple of seconds…

Maybe burning coal smells better than burning diesel - and maybe it doesn’t.
