N scale Atlas Austria won't run revised again ! LINK REPAIRED

the link to the pictures is correct… The motor hums but won’t run w/power directly applied to brush contacts. Is there a source for the motor if it is bad? Also pictured is the shell ( I don.t know the model . I’ve since learned it may be a GP 30/35. http://www.flickr.com/photos/95484627@N03/8709123965/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/95484627@N03/8709124009/ Also when turning the shaft it feels like something is dropping into a detent, not smooth at all. Atlas was no help, nor is E-bay, tried Back Shop Repair, but the E-mail link is no good. I hate to give up on this, it’s not a great loco, but I’m just stuborn I guess. I’ve only been into N scale about a year and there’s alot I’d like to learn.

Beach Bum,

Now I get,PAGE NOT FOUND…

Good Luck!!

Cheers,

Frank

Beach Bum,

Without knowing, much about, what you have without, seeing it, I can suggest,if you can disconnect the drive line from the motor and then make your test, with power to it,if it runs that way,you will know it is not the motor, but the drive line that is causing it not to run…

Good Luck,

Cheers,

Frank

Beach Bum:

Frank has a good point. The gears may be gummed up since the loco is old and the grease may have hardened. If you disconnect the driveline and the motor runs a good cleaning of the gear train and fresh lube is in order.

Link fixed

That loco is a GP30 that is about 40 years old, and was made for Atlas by Roco. IF there is a replacement motor available, it would be from someone that supplies Roco parts. Many years ago, people used to remotor these with a Kato motor, held in place with caulk or double-side foam tape.

Thanks Paul, I had been kicking the idea of remotoring around, but I thought I’d first try to find OEM or equivalent.

Since the photo shows the motor removed from the loco I have to assume it was tested outside of the loco. Since I assume that was unsuccessful I say replace, replace, replace.
