Who makes the better looking Eastern Pine and evergreen trees for n scale? I tried to make some at one time and they came out looking like green bottle brushes. Since I only need a dozen or two, I think I opt for some pre-made ones this time. Jim
I finally found some that looked good enough to put on the layout. They’re from Busch.
Walther’s has them in several sizes, as well as, with or without roots. Those without the roots are less expensive and, I think, work better.
Page 146 of the 2008 Walther’s catalogue is the place to look.
They’re pretty messy right out of the bag, lots of excess material, open over a drop cloth.
Here’s an example mixed in with some Woodland Scenics trees.

I used #6599, which has various sizes from 1 1/8" to 2", #6572 has the same 1 1/8", but goes up to 2 3/8". Either one would be good.
The only thing you might want to do is to sprinkle some lighter ground foam on them to get some color variation.
I tried something with mine. Knowing that usually there’s a ton of pine straw under them, I played with some paint to try and match the color of decaying pine straw and put it down before planting the trees. You can see a little of the effect in this picture.
I have a few neighbors with pine trees in their front yards, I used that color for my target. I might have gone too red, but it’s not too far off.

I have used the Busch evergreens, both pine and spruce. I got some with roots and had to remove the plastic roots before I used them. For foreground trees, I sprayed them with 3M adhesive and dropped them in a container for WS ground foam, shook it to cover the trees with the foam, and then let them dry. I was very pleased with the result. I have over 500 of the Busch trees on my layout.
Busch and also Heike. (SP?) Go to the Scenic Express web site. they sell a bunch of different types. They will send you a REALLY nice catalog for free if you fill out the request form.
You can also download the Scenic Express catalog as well as the Woodland Scenics catalog if you like. Sometimes I cannot find the paper copies, but I always know where my PC is. After the holidays I plan to get some of the Busch evergreen trees an give them a try. Merry Christmas to All.
