The defacto standard N Scale coupler is the Micro Trains coupler and trucks.
Micro Trains coupler and trucks are what I run and have had good results, plus they offer low profile wheels that work on Atlas Code 55 track.
Atlas sells N scale trucks with couplers already mounted. They’re available in both “long” and “short” lengths. With a little modification, they’ll fit nearly every type of freight car. For passenger cars, M-T makes a variety of trucks and couplers. Be aware though, that the trucks with couplers are a pain to assemble.
The most reliable couplers are from MicroTrains. An easy way is to get MT trucks and replace all those rapido fitted trucks. If you have a large collection it is cheaper to buy the bulk packs. Check here for the type of truck you need:- http://www.micro-trains.com/n%20trucks.htm Cheers,
Could you please elaborate on this? I’ve never known Atlas to offer their Accumate line with long and short lengths. I’m only aware of three truck styles (Friction Bearing, 70 Ton & 100 Ton Roller Bearing) with the same length coupler.
Also, what little modification do you make?
Thanks for the good info guys I am going to go with the bulk pack of the Micro trains. I am going to stop by my LHS This week/weekend and talk with them about getting a bulk pack to change things over .

It’s not the coupler that’s longer…but the box it’s mounted in. The box seems to be mounted further out on some of the trucks. I think it’s simply because I unknowingly bought different types of trucks. I’d post a pic, but I’m at work now.
If you ream out the bolster holes, the trucks can be used on cars from many manufacturers. I’ve used them on Bowser hoppers, Con-cor boxcars, and some Bachmann stuff as well ![]()

Thanks! I’ve never noticed that before. Please post pics later if you have them.
