Why not do them yourself? It’s not really hard for most loco’s, especially if you have some instructions. Check this page out ( http://www.trainweb.org/nrmrc/dcc/conversions.html ). About half way down the page are a lot of the more popular loco’s decoder installation instructions.
I was apprehensive at first too, but it’s not really hard once you get your feet wet.
I have the same question as TJM. I have a number of pre-1997 N scale locos (many dating back to the 1970’s), both diesel and steam that will need to be converted if I go to DCC on my new layout. Many of these conversions will require extensive modifications to the loco to accomplish the conversion. I’m willing to attempt some of the simpler conversions myself but would like to find a competent and reasonably priced conversion service for the more complex conversions.

The first thing you must consider before looking for someone to install a decoder is, does the locomotive run well enough to justify the cost. DCC is not a cure-all for a poorly performing engine – in fact, it will probably run worse on DCC than on DC. Only the highest quality, best running engines should be converted, and relegate the others to displays on sidings or a scrap parts box.
In many cases, a new DCC equipped engine is the best purchase decision.
A couple of very reputable companies for decoder installs are Tony’s Trains and Litchfield Station. As for cost, it depends on the loco. Many newer ones have direct board replacement decoders and aren’t difficult at all. Older N scale locos, especially diesels, have little or no space under the shell. The usual method is to mill the frame to make space to put a decoder. For those lacking the equipment,t here are a few companies like Aztec that will mill your frames for you.
If you are comfortable with and can handle adding detail parts like grab irons to N scale locos, then you probably can handle the decoder install even if you have to send the frames out for the milling work.
