What is the length and width of a N scale engine ? I can’t find this on the forum or the internet. I am sorry if this is a basic question… I am new…
It depends on the engine, I suppose. N scale is 1/160 so if you knew the prototype’s size you can do the math.
Wikipedia has a good picture of a steam locomotive next to a pencil to give you an idea of the relative size
I went and measured some 4 axle units i have , GP9 and RS3’s . these are about 4 " , give or take a little. I have one older 6 axle which is about 4 1/2" long. Different engines will be a wee bit different , but not a bunch. Now the newer models like sd70’s will be a lot longer , but i do not have any to measure. Hope this helps
Thank you for the help. I am trying to get an idea how long and wide a N scale engine to see how large I need to make my bench work. Is 4 x 16 ok for a n scale layout ? I don’t want to be restricted down the road.
N scale rails are 9mm (about 3/8") from rail head to rail head. A 15" radius curve would probably be considered a broad one, so if your benchwork is 4 feet across, that should be plenty. I have a peninsula on my layout that is three feet across and even passenger cars look okay going around that turn.
