N Scale F9 and F7 Shell

Does anybody know if a F9 shell will work on a F7, N-Scale. Thanks

The prototype F7 and F9 bodies are virtually identical except for details.

You don’t say what brands the shells are.

The answer to your question is probably assuming

  1. both are accurately scaled .

  2. the side walls of the shells are the same. If the walls of the F9 are thicker than the walls of the F7, it may not fit. If the F9 walls are thiner then shimming may be required. The thickness of the shell may also affect how high the body rides on the chassis.

Another consideration - are front couplers body mounted or truck mounted. Older and cheaper models may have couplers mounted on the truck. Some had a wide opening in the pilot to allow the coupler to swing, others the pilot mounted on the truck so that it moves with the coupler.

Is the shells are the same brand there is most likely no problem.

What brand are the models you’re working with. If you’re using older Trix or Bachmann shells, they won’t work very well with newer Intermountain or Kato drives. Plus, the details on the older shells are so coarse, I don’t know why you’d want to use them.

If you’re thinking about putting a new shell on one of those old drives, (I don’t know if there’s a new F9 shell yet) again, why would you sacrifice the quality of the new drive? The only other model of an F that’s available is the Model Power FP7, which has a die cast metal shell, which will short out on a split frame drive…

Anyway, give us a little more detail about what you’re trying to do, and we’ll see if we can make sense of it for you.
