In the April 2014 issue of MRR (pg 37-39) they showed us how to build a freight house in HO Scale. I was wondering if anyone has tried to make it in N Scale or has the dimentions and materials on how to do it. As always any help is appreciated.
It would be just about 50% or half size. There is an exact conversion factor, but I don’t have it at hand at the monent. Half size should look pretty close, as freight houses were of various sizes.
Have fun,
Richard
Conversion factor: N scale is 54.4% of HO Scale.
Easiest way to build that freight house in N is to use your N Scale ruler and use the plans footage.
30’ on the HO scale ruler is 30’ on the N Scale ruler…
And that’s exactly the way I built 2 N Scale buildings from HO plans back in the '80s.
I will try to get a n scale ruler soon, but what about the materials? What would I use?
I have not seen the April issue yet but,I know they make N Scale doors, windows, lumber and brick sheets so,that’s where I would start my material hunt…
That freight house was constructed with materials from four sources: Evergreen Scale Models, Northeastern Scale Lumber, Depots by John, and Tichy Train Group.
The exact windows and doors are made in N scale by Tichy. The exact eave brackets are made in N scale by Depots by John.
The rest of the structure is made from dimensional strips and sheets of styrene and wood by Evergreen and Northeastern. By taking the dimensions in the article and reducing them by approximately 50%, you have the same exact freight house in N scale.

On all, the Evergreen Scale Models Inc. Styrene products, on the backside of the plastic package is very handy Scale conversion chart, starting out in N-scale dimensions, couln’t get any easier than that and the stripwood is also sold by scale, starting also in N-scale. Another very good source for scale lumber, other than Northeastern, is Mt Albert of Canada, sold by scale.
I suggest You get a Model Railroad Reference Rule, if you don’t already have one.

Thank you all for the information, I’ll be building it this summer.
