N scale GEVO's, BNSF

First off, I don’t know much about which brand is best for what when it comes to N scale locomotives. Currently, Fox Valley Models has the BNSF ES44DC locomotive available. It seems that Fox Valley Models is a small company and I don’t know if they have proven to have reliable and quality loco’s. I see that KATO has the BNSF GEVO’s due out in September, BUT it says that they will be the ES44AC model, not DC. BNSF runs the DC type and not the AC. I found, on Fox Valley Model’s website actually, that "The AC and DC locos use different sills and handrails … (and) The DC body uses the low rear headlight (BNSF). " - http://www.foxvalleymodels.com/nscalelocomotives.html

My question(s) then, is would I notice the difference in the model’s between the AC and DC versions, and if I do, and want the DC, would Fox Valley Models be okay to use for a quality N scale engine? Also, why is KATO not modeling the ES44DC for the BNSF roadname?

Thank you!

BNSF has both ES44DC & ES44AC locomotives. They also have the ES44AC4 model. Maybe the Kato model has a different headlight/pilot variation that is not used by BNSF.

Yes, they are both used by BNSF, as previously stated.

The AC unit has a small cabinet that sits behind the large inverter cabinet, & hence a different grab iron configuration. Most people would not know the difference between them.

If I recall correctly, the difference of role is, heavy drags (like coal) & fast freight (intermodal or auto racks etc.).

Also, IIRC, once again BNSF & UP do the complete opposite practices.

This info came from one of the Dream Plan Build, Real Trains DVD’s.

Hope that helps in your decision.
