N scale Kato C44-9W Shell problem

I just installed a Digitrax SDN144K1E sound decoder into a N scale Kato C44-9W.

I used a Digitrax speaker(10 MM X18 MM ) which I mounted under the decoder at the rear of the loco. I also removed the supplied 100uF capacitor and replaced it with two 100uF surface mount caps wired in parallel. The problem is I can’t get the shell to fit down at the rear.

After looking real good I found that the loco’s exhaust stack was hitting the decoder. So I removed some of the boss material on under side of the exhaust stack inside of the shell to make some room. Now the small clip that holds the front of the radiator to the shell is hitting the decoder. If I remove the radiator I can get the shell on. If I remove the clip I would have to glue the radiator to the shell to hold the front of the radiator down to the shell.

Any one ever do one of these installs?

You have to remove the clip and glue the radiator on. Normally, the exhaust stack also needs to be glued on after removing enough material inside for clearance.

I was just checking to make sure that I had not overlooked some thing.

Yes, you are correct about the exhaust stack. Had to be glued after I removed the boss and the stacks pins.

Very little room between the decoder and shell !
