N scale Low Hood GP9s

I’m interested in modeling a shortline railroad in Manitoba that runs refurbished GP-9s. I know that some of this lines locomotives are the low-hood variety. And I’ve been having some trouble finding them in N scale online. Does anyone know of a company that sells them online? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You are sooo in luck. Check out BROOKLYN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS at www.buyNscale/Locomotives.html. Like-Like made them.

Nope, not in luck there, BLW won’t ship to canada.

Credit Valley has them at C$99, http://www.cvrco.com/catalogu.htm

CMT has CP only at $95 http://www.modeltrains.com/WEB%20-%20CMT/Proto/N-scale%20-%20Canadian/proto-n-canadian-allroads.htm

cheers

Mike

Muchas gracias,

Even if Brooklyn Locomotives don’t ship to Canada, I’ve got a couple of options (friends from down South and all that), so I may look into it anyway. Thanks for the links!

Pray, correct me if I am wrong but something has apparently slipped past me in the dark of night; when did Life-Like manufacture GP9s. I know they put out both high-hood and low-hood GP18s - the GP18 is, for all practical purposes, identical to the Phase IV GP9 with 48 instead of 36 inch fan(s).

Sometime in the early to mid-'70s one of the hobby magazines - MR I do believe - did a feature on converting one of the old Atlas N-Scale GP9s to a low-hood unit. Then about twenty years ago RMC - at least memory serves me that it was RMC - did a series of articles on Paducah Rebuilds; the original series of articles were oriented in HO-Scale but a subsequent issue had an article on doing one of these Paducah Rebuilds in N-Scale. One of the features of both these (series of) articles was on chopping the nose which included cutting down the internal weight. Since Life-Like subsequently issued their low hood GP18 I have often wondered why the cab a/o nose section could not just be spliced onto a GP9 body shell to give an acceptable low-hood unit. I have toyed for years with the idea of tackling this project.

Even more recently - 1997/98 - there was an article in N-Scale magazine about constructing an SD24 using an Atlas SD9 body and GP18 low-hood nose. The author - Ron Beardon??? - profusely illustrated his article and, this too, was one of those projects which I toyed with for years but which Atlas has rendered moot.
