I have a bit of a problem, I have a decent sized HO layout in my garage, but since we’re rebuilding our home I have been forced to take it down. I’ve decided to build a small N scale layout in the mean time just so I have something to run. Since I’ve never built anything in N scale before I would like to know what are the best ways to go abount it? Thanks
Kind of an open ended question. The construction techniques, roadbed, track, scenery, wiring, are all about the same.
How big a space? Does it need to be mobile?
Consider building something on a hollow core wood door. Light, stiff, easy to move (take down / set up - if necessary).
Consider joining an Ntrack club in your area and just constructing a module in your house. Bring your module to the club to assemble and run with the others.
Here are some good small N scale plans:

(the site may have moved. if that doesn’t work try:)

Good luck with your new layout,

Back again.
Phoenix, eh?
Are you familiar with the Sun’n’Sand NTrak model railroad club in Scottsdale? Might be a good place to start. I’ve seen shots of their setup. Pretty impressive. Think you might find some good advice if you try there.
Here’s a link to their club website:
