N Scale questions

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a couple things on my small N scale layout. 1) What would be the width dimensions (in inches) of an N-scale road? I want to model a small paved country 2 lane road in Pennsylvania.

  1. What would be the size (also in inches) of a N-scale main line tunnel opening? I want a single tunnel style seen in the eastern U.S. I just want to be able to figure these into my construction. Thanks!!!

#1 - One and ten/sixteenths

#2 - Not sure, maybe one and a half inches.

I use 2 1/4" wide roads in town so folks can park on the side of the road, as below:

Woodland Scenics’ tunnel portals are pretty generous. Their cut stone portal is appropriate for Eastern railroads. They may have the dimensions on their website.

Dave, How did you build your steets?

My country roads are all one and a quarter inch wide, while the streets in town are one and three quarters of an inch wide.

My tunnel openings are one and a half inches wide and one and three quarters of and inch high.

By the way, welcome to the forum…

Here is an overlooked source for the art of making streets, concrete, asphalt, cobblestones, curbs, etc. Traction layouts by their nature have a requirement for prototypical street modeling.

You can find many ideas to model streets with different building materials.

Styrene sheets, .020" thick. I scored expansion joints for the conrete slab roads.
