N scale roadbed for yards

Hi all,

On my N scale layout I would like to have the yard and spur tracks a little lower than the main line, just like the prototype. I was browsing through my local hardware store and came across this.

It is a 1/16" thick cork material that comes in 12"x30" rolls. It will be 1/2 the thickness of the roadbed I’m using for the mainline. Will this stuff work or is there a better alternative? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, that stuff will work. You can also get that at the local craft store. Check it out and buy the cheaper one.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll look at the craft stores since I need a few rolls of it and I’m on a tiny budget.

I just picked up a 24" x 48" roll of 1/16" thick cork from Wal-mart for ~$7.50. They had it in the office supply area where you’d buy whiteboards and corkboards for hanging on your wall.

That’ll work!

Thanks for the tip, I know where I’m going for roadbed now!

My local Michael’s crafts store sells a roll of 3/16" thick cork that’s 1x2’ large. I’m using it for my yard. It actually comes to a few hairs shorter than N scale roadbed, which is good enough. It also costs about $3.
