N Scale Roads... how wide?

Hey all,
I am modeling roads in N-scale, and don’t know how wide they should be (in inches, not prototype feet please). I am thinking country roads, not expressways, and am only having one lane each way without curbs. Any ideas as to how wide I shoudl make them? Thanks.

Ben

In N scale: 3/4 in = 10 ft: A country road might be two 20 ft 10 ft (20 ft pavement)lanes plus 5 ft gravel shoulders.
That would be 1-1/2 inch pavement with a 3/8 inch gravel shoulder on each side.

Outside the shoulders there would, in many areas, be drainage ditches. They could add another 3/8 in or so on each side.

1-1/2 in pavement + 2 x 3/8 in shoulder + 2 x 3/8 in ditches = 3 inches (40 scale feet)

Just what I wanted to know. Thanks! Ben

DSchmitt,

I think your math is a bit off … two 20ft lanes = 40ft pavement or 3" in N-scale.

Based on your numbers, a country road should be …
two 20 ft lanes = 40 ft total pavement = 3.00 "
two 5 ft shoulders = 10 ft total shoulders = 0.75 "
two 5 ft ditches = 10 ft total ditches = 0.75 "
TOTAL = 60 ft = 4.50 "

Thankyou: see my corrected post above. it should have been two 10 ft lanes (20 ft pavement)
