I am starting to scratchbuild some factories for my n scale layout and was having trouble finding household materials that would be good for an n scale smokestack. Any info on anything that i could use that i could probably find in my house would be great.
thanks
What kind of smokestack did you have in mind?
I mean, a straight cylinder one (like a Q-tip shank), a tapered cylinder (like a pen body), a square or rectangle, tapered or straight?
What measurements…? 3 inches tall, 6 inches…?
What diameter?
Modern, early 1900’s…?
Capped?
Brick, concrete…?
A little more info on what your trying to do might help to narrow down what would work for you.
Some Plastistruct might be best, but you might not consider that a “household” item.
Let us know. I’d be glad to help but in order for us to help you better it would help us to know what your intended goal is. [8D]
I wouldn’t bother trying to scratchbuild a brick chimney. Model Railstff makes several nice ones in N scale:

Walthers makes nice ones in HO, which would be OK for a large stack in N:

For concrete or steel stacks, just use Plastruct or Evergreen round tubing. Realistically, you’re not going to find many household items that come close to this.
