n-scale Spectrum 2-8-0

Hello, All;

Well, the “Property Manager” has allowed me a tiny area which may accomodate an n-scale layout. It’d be perfect for the Spectrum 2-8-0 and a branch line operation. Does anyone have an opinion on or experience with this little engine before I sink $100 into yet another steamer? Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks;
smyers

Many people have written that the Kato USRA heavy mikado is the best N scale steamer available. I disagree; I feel it’s #2 to the Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0. It’s well detailed, runs beautifully, and is very reliable. We have them running for 10 hours straight on our Ntrak layout, pulling 20 car trains. And they’re affordable. Trainworld has them for $75, and there are several on Ebay right now going for between $50-$100.

I have heard similar good things about the Bachmann 2-8-0. However, most have also agreed that it’s best to test it before purchasing. While they are supposed to be smooth runners, they seem to have up-front (hit or miss) quailty issues. If it runs good from the start, then you’re good to go.

I have three of them. I bought all three on ebay which, with this loco, is gutsy. One worked pretty good. The other two were so bad I sent them back to Bachmann and they replaced them. Of the two replacements, only one was really good. The other was not a good runner. So…I certainly agree with the axiom that unless you’re into fixing wheel gauge problems, wheel quartering, rod straightening, you should certainly try one out before you buy it. And, if you can, run it through a turnout not just a straight piece of track. Two cents…Tom
