Has anyone used N-scale tunnel portals, cut down, as creek tunnels? I have a stream “originating” off the layout, flowing under a set of tracks, and spilling into a lake. The creek is too small for a plate girder bridge, but too big for a culvert.
Yes. Yes I do. I model in HO, and it worked great. This is an N-scale double track portal by Utlimate Scenery:
My layout is built from foam, so I carved the arch out. Then I used one portal for each side, and some lightweight spackel to smooth out the inside.

Looks great! I model HO scale as well. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to try something crazy.
Wow ! That’s a terrific idea ! I have some portals laying around. Looks
great. Might as well put them to use as bridges.[:)]
Another idea (Not my own, I saw years ago in Model Railroader. Use an O scale or O tinplate signal bridge as an HO steel trestle with deck truss— or use the HO scale signal bridge for an N scale bridge.
My own variation-- use inexpensive mass-produced plastic signal bridge to make over-track pipe crossing for refinery or chemical plant district.
I once used an eagle casting made as the figurehead for a 1/240 sailing ship as part of the concrete cornice for a 1920 era city school building.
Or HO scale pigeon “figurebashed” as N scale chickens under the front porch of a
hillbilly house.
