Hi Guys, I’m looking for reviews on the Lifelike/Walthers Proto N GP38-2s. I’m in need of 4 axle power for my layout and Walthers has the GP38-2s on sale for about 50 bucks. I’m curious as to how they run and how easy it is to put a Decoder in. Also if they take a drop in Decoder what decoder do they use?
Funny you should ask! I’m just starting out in N scale (as a side project to my HO QR models) and I bought an N scale GP38-2 yesterday in BN colours It cost me $A120. It rims superbly and very quiet, extremely well detailed too. I haven’t looked at decoders yet but it’s relatively simple. I will certainly be buying more Proto products!
I’ve read that they are good runners, but the DCC issue has been discussed in detail here:
