N scale wheel question

How do you tell if the new n scale engines have low flange wheels.

I have an old life like engine and the flanges hit the ties on the Kato unitrack ,an it makes the engine shake .

thank you

Rich

Well, the NMRA has a standard practice for wheels. One of the dimensions they show is for the flange depth. See the “D” dimension for N scale at http://www.nmra.com/standards/sandrp/S-4_2ScaleWheels.html

Wow, hitting the ties on Unitrack? Yikes! That’s code 80! You’ve got some substantial flanges there.

Just about any new release since the mid 90’s should have proper flanges. Although, I’ve had some Life Like FA’s that have needed turning to get them to ride rumble free on Atlas c55. Nothing fatal. I believe that since Walther’s took over LL, everything should heretofore be to spec.
