Hello John,
There is a hotel along the CSX two track main with NS wye near the village of Lyons. I’m not sure how you’re arriving … if it’s the Thruway, take Exit 42 to Route 14 and drive north.
If this doesn’t work, try:

The hotel is somewhere within the red outlined area.
I hope this helps.

Carousel Mall in Syracuse is right next to the main and also gets visits from OnTrack’s RDCs. Plenty of parking, and you’re not likely to get hassled, especially if you have something in the car you bought at the mall.
CP291 is also where the St Lawrence Sub takes off north, although with the derailment in Central Square this weekend, traffic might not be moving right away. On the other hand, it’ll probably get very busy when the open the line again.
I suppose you could also take a ride on the RDCs. Search for OnTrack (Ontrak?) for information.
The Adirondack may still be running in Thendara, about a three hour drive via Utica and north. Not sure if they are still running out of Utica.
