Name Of The 'Yellow' Color Used For The Chessie System?

To All,

Please, I would appreciate any help, if anyone can tell me the name of the ‘Yellow’ color used on the Chessie System for a model train which I want to paint and to have the correct color yellow?

Thank You,

Ralph

C&O Yellow, B&O Royal Blue, and Vermillion for the red/orange striping.

The original C & O Yellow was entitled “Federal Yellow”; not sure if the C & O’s blue extended into the Chessie scheme or not, if so it would have been C & O “Enchantment Blue”. And you’re on your own for the Vermillion.

Edit: Floquil’s “Reefer Yellow” is a very close match to the yellow, and Polly S makes the “Enchantment Blue”…have no idea about the Vermillion, I haven’t painted anything into Chessie colors, strictly C & O.

chuck,

Thank you for your answers.

I thought the yellow would be ‘Insignia Yellow’, I didn’t know that C&O was the name for their color yellow, as they have ‘Enchantment Blue’ and ‘Vermilion’ for red.

Ralph

locomutt,

I thank you for your information on the three colors.

Ralph

B&O Royal Blue and C&O Enchanted Blue are very close. The source I had for Royal Blue was one of the C&O books “Chessie the Railroad Kitten” by Thomas Dixon. The vermillion isn’t really red, it’s more of an orange color. Here is a railfan’s site with some suggested colors: http://www.trainweb.org/chessie/paints.htm BTW, he uses SP Daylight Orange for vermillion.

If you’re doing a C & O unit, I’d suggest the Enchantment Blue; for a Chessie job? I’ve not done one. The Enchantment Blue (to me) seems darker that the Royal Blue.

Vermillion is more of an Orange color than red; really like the suggestions for use of that color.

I have a copy of “Chessie the Railroad Kitten” in my collection of C & O books. Chessie debuted way before the “Chessie System”! Was one of the old C & O’s major Logos.

locomutt and chuck,

Thank you both again for the paint companies, colors and further info. of C&O, Chessie System, Web.Site and the title of T. Dixon’s book: “Chessie The RailRoad Kitten.”

Ralph

I always found the Chessie paint scheme to be one of the nicest, period. I’d rank it second behind the Santa Fe Warbonnet. The book is great, featuring Peake (Chessie’s old man) and the kittens. There was talk of a “Bessie”, a B&O cat back when the unification talks of the early 60’s and a “Newton” with respect to a possible merger with the N&W in the late 60’s. No illustrations of the later two were presented.

chuck,

That’s interesting to know of the different names dreamt-up for these railroads, along with their paint schemes.

Thank You,

Ralph
