Name Those Commuter Trains??

Hi, there are two TV commercials that have been running heavily, at least in the Chicago area.

The first is for JC Penney and shows a woman in the latest JC Penney clothes. As she walks down the street birds twitter, steam pops out of the sidewalk; the general idea is that Penney’s clothes are stylish and hot.

At the very end of the commercial she walks by a streamlined bilevel rail car. No locomotive is evident, but the lead cab, which is painted yellow, shows a pantograph. Any ideas where this is?

Another popular ad portrays a nebbishy little man on a moving commuter train who is just trying to talk to a real, live person on his cell phone about his credit-card account. He is put through all kind of embarrassing maneuvers trying to talk to someone (repeating his PIN, for example); and just as he is in touch with a real person from the credit-card company, the train plunges into a tunnel and disconnects him. Train appeared to have 2 + 3 seating, was one-level streamlined, and drew overhead power. (The clearance is VERY tight).

Any ideas? I apologize if this has come up already; I searched for “Penney” and “Citibank” with no results.

I’ve seen the Citibank one and the train looks like an NJ Transit train possibly entering the Hudson tubes. Not sure though.

I’v seen both commercals and think (i may be wrong) the first one looks like a long island railway bi level and the second a MTA commuter rail car.[8D]

try to look up pictures at www.railpictuers.net

A streamlined bilevel electric strikes me as a Metra train on the old IC suburban lines out of Chicago. The cellphone/credit card commercial suggests the old DL&W electrification out of Jersey City.

Am I right? Do I win a prize?

The dude’s password was…“big boy”. lol

Two electrified USA railroads are now running bilevels: LIRR and METRA. If it is a gallery car, it is Metra. On the LIRR this would have been one of the two-mode trains hauled by the new diesel pushed or pulled trains that can use pure electric power off third drail into Manhattan throught the Eastr river tunnels. 3-2 seating could be on either SEPTA or Metro North or LIRR, with all engering tunnels All silver exterior-Septa, silver and organge, Metro North New Haven, Silver with blue front, Metro North Hudson and Harlem. silver and yellow front Long Island.

I’m a bit more likely to think beyond our borders in matters like this and I think that the MU cars in the JC Penney commercial are Australian.

The bank/credit card commercial is probably NJ Transit.

This was discussed on RR.net

It is on NJT and it is MNCR pool equipment (NY State Blue).

I haven’t seen the new Metra IC cars but doubt that the one in the Penney’s commercial is one . . . the cab end is painted yellow, and the windows in the entry doors seem to be “staggered” relative to the windows at the passengers’ seats. I’ve only seen Metra use diagonally striped red-and-white on its cabs.

BUT you’ve got the NJT one nailed, David. Thanks!

Any more info on the train in the JC Penney ads?? - a.s.

“would you like a shiny creditcard?”
