Naming modern locomotives

Don’t you miss those “good ole days” when a variety of steam locomotives rolled across the name and made the imagination soar with great names like “big boy,” “northern,” and “hudson.” Well, I know there is not the variety in locomotives styles and such today, but I thought it would be fun to put our imaginations to work. If we were to give modern locomotives names based on asthetics or performance, what names would you give them? I can’t wait to hear your creative ideas.

Ron

Well, railfans have always called the Conrail (now CSX and NS) SD80MACs “Conrail Cadillacs”, and I’ve always liked that.

I would call the AC4400CW and SD70MAC the new “Go Anywhere Do Anything” engines. I’ve seen them in everything from coal service to yard duty.

As for the SD70ACe’s and M-2’s, I like them, but the cab reminds me of “Frankenstien”.

If it’s a diesel, call it number 43.

On the Maine Central, the Seaboard and P&W had the baby boats (U18B’s) these were also called the Independance Class on the Maine Central (All where named after Revolutionary War hero’s)

I thought everyone called the dash-9’s “whales”.

I can name modern ones in one word…JUNK.

All diesels, modern or otherwise, should have only one name - “Ugly painted box.”

P.U. - Plain Ugly
U.B. - Urban Blight
Whumped - As in “whumped with an UGLY STICK”
RALPH - For no reason at all
stUPid - In honor of UPs fleet

Hi guys
There is no polite name for diesle locomotives.
however some of them have been given name plates like the steamers of old
So has any one bult or super detailed a locomotive to represent one of these named locomotives.
regards John

The SD70ACe is beautiful and a name for it could be
“The flying dog” I do not know why but it reminds me of the flying dog in The Never Ending Story movie. I love that movie too. What was the dogs name?

Now, guys. Play nice! [;)]

That is unless it’s a NS unit, then it’s a “Catfish”.

I think Thomas and Percy got it right:

DISEASELS.

Coal smoke forever!

GE Gags Everyone,Gutless Engine. Not too much you can do with naming them. Not much romance in railroading anymore.

Rail Kings. Freight Masters. Wind Slicers. Etc.

Just let me know, I’ve got plenty more where those came from…

They might be almost the ugliest things but one can hardly call them junk. They have the best in-service and fuel economy records of any locomotive built to date. And that doesn’t even get into their amazing tractive effort, starting power, non-stalling anti-skid circuitry. The railroads would probably have gone extinct without the SD70 and -9Ws.

Can’t anyone try to seriously, think about, and answer the actual question the topic starter ask?

Thanks, TZ, for getting us back on track here. I was thinking the GP38-2 should be called “old reliable” since these beasts seem to just run forever.
