Narrow Gauge Fans - WSLC - Letter of Support

I’ve been working for the past few years to save the remaining structures of WS. I’ve met with the tribe twice, the most recent meeting was with the Tuolumne Economic Development Authority(run by the tribe) last September. We discussed the possibility of rebuilding the structures and turning them into a Museum. They were open to the idea of a Museum and agreed that the current buildings would have to be completely rebuilt. The other problem was that they had a golf course going through those buildings. They were already planning on taking them down, and replacing them with some false fronts for display on the golf course. To make a long story short, they expressed their interest in preserving the WS, they know how it played an important role in the history of the town. However, the current proposal was not going to work. They asked me to come back with another proposal, which does not interfere with the golf course plans and an organized group. So I came up with a new proposal and a group consisting of Ed Sieckert, Art Kauppi, Glen Tyra and myself to help move this forward. This new proposal calls for a structure to be built at a different location, one which does not interfere with the current plans of the Tribe. It would also use some parts of the existing structures, such as siding material. Inside, it will house WS equipment as well as other logging equipment, including a few of the steam donkeys on the mill property.

We are currently working with the Tuolumne City Memorial Museum, and the Tuolumne Economic Development Authority. I think the history of WS deserves one more chance. Their is no group/organization to join yet, for now I’ve created a Letter of Support which I’m hoping you will all sign. This will only strengthen our position and it will show just how many people are interested in seeing WS preserved.

If you support this idea you can click on the following link and add your name online or you can visit my website and sign it there.

Is the location a secret or something? I went to your site , visted page after page and still you havn’t said what state it is in . How do you expect much a response is beyond me.

The town is Tuolumne. Located in California.

Narrow Gauge people will know this.

Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me. I missed the part about “narrow Gauge people” only. Glad to hear that you don’t need support from us inferior all gauge railfans.

I’m asking for support from anyone who thinks it should be preserved. I titled it that way because I knew it would interest the NG committee.

If you don’t want to sign it fine. I’m simply putting it out there for those who are interested.

I’ll be happy to answer any other questions. For those who don’t know much about the railroad, take a look at this website and it should bring you up to speed on things.

I say, easy there, son. Now West Side Lumber was the last known 3’ logging railroad in the US of A that was all steam, or almost all steam. I think I recall X2200 having a feature on narrow gauge “drop cab” GE 45-65 ton units. West Side may have owned a “dropcab”. They were wide spread from Maine to Maui and beyond, thanks to the USATC, which owned most of them. I recall seeing one at an open house at the former Bethlehem steel plant site in LA (Mudville-ese for Lackawanna NYSSR)!

A friend of one of my cousins models WSL in his garden, garage and one room of his house and it is very impressive.

Terrific!. It still a fact that not everyone has memorized every detail of every logging road and to have such a vast amount of text without giving away the state it’s in is amazing especially when asking us to sign this letter of support and not know what we are supporting. I’m sure I’m not the only one who is not intimately aquainted with this very local operation.
