Narrow gauge museum to remain in Portland until 2017

Since they are hoping to raise six million dollars for the relocation, any reprieve in the “have to go” date should help.

The narrow-gauge line in Portland is a rare example of a standard-gauge line being reduced to narrow gauge instead of vice-versa. The Maine Narrow Gauge uses part of the old right-of-way (and even some of the standard-gauge ties) of the former St. Lawrence & Atlantic that once served the Portland waterfront.

Since Maine’s two-footers were primarily logging roads, the current location on the Portland waterfront is a little odd. It is more accessible to tourists in Portland, but the trains will be more authentic, and more at home, in the wooded setting in Gray.
