Narrow gauge railroad running as Durango copes with mine spill
I’ve heard all the presidential candidates and I know a conspiracy when I see one. It is obvious that this is an EPA plot to kill off the narrow gauge and require all of us to travel by standard gauge whether we want to or not.
So…is the EPA going to fine itself?
Fine themselves, HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA, now that’s funny.
Bet they try to blame someone else for forcing them to be there in the first place.
Let this be a lesson: Don’t uncork a bottle that’s been corked for a long, long time and then be surprised when a VERY PO’d genie pops out!
Or as my mother would have said “Don’t touch that, you don’t know where it’s been!”
No big “evil” evil corporations to blame here. No opportunity to stifle capitalism either. The EPA will continue on sweeping this under the carpet as quickly as it occurred. Now, if only railroads could be so lucky when they drop cross ties in water filled ditches.
“Hi, we’re from the government and we’re here to help!”
Any info on fish kills?
There are 10s of thousands of abandoned mines in the US. In many of them the mining companies walked away without managing their leaking mines. Now the EPA is spending tax dollars to try to clean them up. You can see this mine was leaking on Google Earth images north of Silverton. If the EPA didn’t spring a big leak as they were probing the mine prior to clean-up evaluation, it would have still leaked forever, and maybe failed on it’s own.
Wasn’t the EPA one of Rick Perry’s agencies that he could remember that he wanted to shut down? The Eventually Polluting Anything will got right along with the Bureau of Land Mis-management which wiped out a number of homes in Trinity Co., CA, while trying to control star thistle with fire.
On a serious note, the mine is likely to continue discharging tainted water as long as there is a source of water that will flow through the mine. That is what is so bad about all the abandoned mines.
Kudos to Trains for the best article yet on the mine spill.
The river may live up to its name now.
The EPA should be fined Excessively like they like to do so often and the money should be given to the Forest Service to restock & CLEAN UP of effected areas; and business that lost revenue due for uncorking the debris-blocked entrance to the Gold King.
This is a disaster made on purpose. A retired geologist, who lives in Silverton, wrote one week BEFORE the release that the EPA was on the verge of doing exactly what happened so they can get the accelerated timetable and money of a Superfund designation. So, now Obama’s EPA is killing the environment purely for their own aggrandizement. Sick.
Very interesting. It does not even take “reading between the lines” to get what Mr. Diven is saying… . .the plume is already a non-issue just days after it happened!! River back to “normal” toxic levels. But, still no one talking about fining the EPA for its obvious blunder! Typical Government agency. Get ready for them to blame someone else as others have already mentioned.
At least EPA was trying to clean up. And so far it sounds like nobody was physically hurt.
Congratulations to Trains on this report! It contains more correct and succinct information than any of the local newspapers carried.
A number of our historic and fascinating mining districts have unfortunately left a legacy of ongoing water (and ground) pollution. Now we, the taxpayers, are left with the bill to clean up this historic mess. Many of the downstream users have been forceful advocates for treating this problem for decades.
I hope that all the affected parties are justly compensated for their losses. Perhaps we should consider rewriting the long outdated1873 Mining Law that allows mining corporations to lay claim to pubic lands without providing adequate protection for the downstream users.
As for the contumely directed at the EPA (signed into law by Richard Nixon) I can only add that you and I will ultimately end up footing the bill for any fines. This is more robbing Peter to pay Paul. I would rather see those responsible held accountable.
Ultimately they will blame it on Bush.
