National freight register?

I figure you guys would know where I can look. I’m looking for info on how much and what types of precast concrete products may have been hauled by rail in North America since about 1970 or so.

thanks

Ken

There is no national registry of shippers and consignees.

The information you seek should be contained in a database called the “1% waybill sample.” It is collected by the Surface Transportation Board (and prior to the STB’s creation by the Interstate Commerce Commission). Because it contains proprietary information it is made available to qualified researchers only. Access can be expensive, also.

You might want to contact the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (www.bts.gov) and see if they can assist you – they might have precast concrete moved by rail broken out as a separate STCC (Standard Transportation Commodity Code) quantity and may have summary information that is non-proprietary. The STCC for precast concrete is 32719.
