Hopefully this facility in Galesburg, IL will be built at a key site that accomodates train watching. If you want to draw crowds, you have to put it where followers of railroading will gather. Developing a piece of land off the interstate is fine for fastfood restaurants and motels…not a railroad hall of fame.
They probaly will have shuttles to take you to the spots in that area. Also just the fact they want to build it says something about Galesburg. I know I will go to it since they will have alot of stuff from the older era plus newer things. I can think one thing that would bring some intrest have a cut away model of a steam engines drive off of saya big boy or something like that. Also have a comparison of the 4 different types of engines used in diesel electric locomotives. Have say a 251 a 645 a fdl and a rockcrusher FM motor there all in cutaway models.
Hadn’t even heard about this so I had to look it up.

The map under “project info” indicates it’ll be south of Main St and West of 74, apparently in Kiwanis Park. If that is correct that would mean it is not next to he lines on the east side of town, but I’m unsure of what viewing would be since the proposed building is 3 stories. I’d agree that it’d be sad to have such a nice museum without a clear view of an active rail line, especially in an active place like Galesburg.
The official announcement is scheduled for tomorrow so maybe it’ll cleared up then.

I was kinda surprises when they said Kiwanis Park too but a building of that size plus parking for it will take up a lot of space and I can’t think of any place in town that there would be that much space adjacent to tracks. Not without a lot of eminent domain action.

This is not intended as an equipment museum but as a museum dedicated to railroaders.

Exactly my point. I really do appreciate what the museum folks are doing but what better way to show the life of a railroader then to have a spot where you can watch them doing their job. Hopefully they can work something out with the railroads to bus them as Ed was saying.
