If I had a fixed location to work from… when I did, I always had a train on display - often took a 9V battery and ran it back and forth a little too. Now, we only have hot cubes in the office, which I visit maybe once every couple of weeks to turn in paperwork, so no train at work for me. Such is the life of a consultant.
Almost makes me wish I was not retired… Almost, but not quite! [:-^]
When i was teaching, I often had some project I was working on in my classroom. Did get a lot of questions about what I was doing and why. Found several young kids that were very much interested in the hobby and model making.
I would sincerely encourage people to take some models, completed or in progress to your place of work if you can. Every presence we make, can keep the hobby going and introduce it more people.
I think it is Nov 16 this year, I alys remember it the Friday before Thanksgiving here in the US.
Actually on one of the other pages on this site they talk about it, but what is funny is that I found it on Google, ha hah…
It was previously fairly well publicized. Not sure why not this year.
The Worlds Greatest Hobby organization is usually the sponsor / promoter of the event. I poked around on their website for a while and couldn’t find any reference to the 12th annual day (2012). Maybe they gave up on it.
Two people at my work saw my layout sitting in my book shelf and as a result visited their local hobby shop to get a train set. They didn’t know that modeling trains was a serious hobby and had advanced so much.
I have since taken it home and added a sky background.
Pre finished photos below. But as you can see if’s 32" long and 12" deep. Just enough to fit in a standard shelf. It looks a ton better since I finished it. Stained the wood and weathered it and finished the track and lighting details.
I say that because as someone said, it looks to be the Friday before TG here in the USA.
I found several postings from OLD MR online issues relating it for years past, and so I imagine the same this year. Perhaps they will have it again in their newsletter this year as the day draws closer!
I notice that question of why comes up when I tell someone I’m a model railroader. It’s funny, I don’t ask someone why they Golf, or hunt or anything else. Of course, I’m a grown man playing with trains so it would be like telling them I play with Lego’s. It demands an explanation I guess!
Sad, isn’t it? I will say that, in all the years I’ve been taking something to work, (six or seven, now), I’ve only heard that two or three times. Most people are very interested (although I usually have to explain that it is “National Take a Model Train to Work Day,” and most people think I’m pulling their legs about that.
I just picked up my Walther’s sourcebook, and the pull out wall calendar doesn’t mention the event, either. So I shot an e-mail over to the WGH folks. We’ll see what they say,
We appreciate that our calendar and Reference Book is a go-to resource, we strive to that standard. We apologize for inadvertently omitting National Take a Model Train To Work Day this year. Rest assured, we won’t miss it in the future!
