Nebraska depot to be demolished
12’ away? So what. Its worked fine for over 100 years. Save this historically significant building and let Union Pacific build their metal building beside it.
Very good looking building. Very pleasing to the eye. Too bad it is going away.
Offer it to anyone for 1 dollar to make it go away, Pa. is doing that right now to old historical bridges in hopes someone will buy them and reuse them elsewhere, as the state replaces them with more up to date bridge structures.
Reposition the track to 35’ away and save the depot. It would cost less to rehabilitate the depot an move the track.
It is a shame to lose such a treasure.
Nice looking building and too bad it is getting torn down, but it belongs to the UP and nobody else wants it to move, as for moving a main line 35 feet I doubt that would be a cost effective idea. UP has been great about keeping historical items for the public to enjoy (and improve UP’s image) we can’t expect them to save things that interfere with their business. To bad it could not be moved.
Great looking depot. I am a big fan of old depots, however, it sounds like UP has little choice. Ed. Sheridan, Winter, Wi.
Where do they get these figures from? You could probably build a fairly close copy for less than that. Looks like somebody is making an excuse to vandalize our heritage.
I’m guessing it could easily have been moved, and saved if UP had notified a national audience instead of the tiny community of Columbus NE. Shades of the North Platte station destruction of 42 years ago (largest WW2 canteen).
Reminds me of BNSF demolishing the Harvey House in Seligman, AZ because it was “too close to the tracks”. Such a pity in both cases.
