Nebraska dinner train to shut down in October

Really sad to see this thing happen, but the writing was on the wall for some time. In early 2011 Mike Williams of Richmond, Missouri (owner of a railroad material salvage company) purchased the FEVR (Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Railroad) which owned the line where the Fremont Dinner Train operated. His main ambition was to restore a bridge north of Fremont, near Nickerson, NE, and use the line further north to store empty grain cars,off-season. Apparently it’s cheaper to scrap a rail line and slavage the rail for profit.
This line was once part of Chicago & North Western’s “Cowboy Line” that ran into Wyoming and the Black Hills of South Dakota. The line dates back to 1869.
The remaining 13 miles of track will most likely become farmland once again (Another Ghost Railroad).

What a shame… my ex-wife and I went on the Fremont Dinner Train many times and had a wonderful experience each time.

If I read the article correctly, it’s not really being shut down, merely relocated which is no where near as dire.

It’s sad to see the line in NE go but at least the dinner train will continue to operate in KS. Too many tourist lines and dinner trains haven’t survived in recent years. One of my favorites was the Shasta Sunset dinner train on the McCloud Rwy in CA.

The railroad was sold and is now known as the Fremont Northern.
The current owner is Mike Williams of Raymore, MO
