After a 40 year hiatus i am getting back into this hobby. Try as I might I cannot come up with a Road Name to suit my Initials - BWD. I am intending to model the 1930’s or 1940’s. It will based on albiet loosely on the roads in Southern Ontario. I have tried B & WD or BW & D. But am unable to come up with anything that seems plausible or worth mentioning here.
Welcome back to the hobby. There are quite a few of us coming back after a lengthy hiatus, 25 years for me. As you have discovered, things have changed. This forum was VERY helpful to me and still is. Names are pretty personsl. How about Boondocks and West Deepwoods. Have a blast and keep us posted. We are into learning together here.
How about a look at a map of the area. I see Brantford, Waterloo, & Drayton. Or Berlin (what Kitchener used to be known as), Wingham, & Dungannon. And there are loads of others. Pick the general area that you’re interested in, then look for suitable towns, lakes, or rivers. Good luck. I’m modelling the same location and era, albeit with some of the towns geographically rearranged to suit my whims. (My version of the Maitland River empties into Lake Erie just west of Lowbanks.)
My personal choice for the BW would be Blackwater or Bluewater. Looking at the map, I was thinking of Dungannon for the D as well. As mentioned, look at the geography for towns/cities and natural forms in the area you are modeling. Best of luck.
If you don’t mind crossing the border, B could be Buffalo, with Welland for W. Since my knowledge of Ontario’s geography is a close approximation of zero, I leave D as an exercise for the student.
Thank you all for your helpfull suggestions and names. I do like the idea of having Buffalo and Detroit in the name. After all both are gateways into Ontario. The Michigan Central, Wabash, Pierre Marquette and the New York Central all had a pressence in Ontario at one time or another, particularly in St. Thomas, Ontario.
Thanks Big John for your suggestion on Broke, Wasted & Deranged. If I didn’t know better we may have partied together in the seventies. Hense the 40 year Hiatus.
Again, thanks for all your helpfull suggestions. I will keep you posted on the final decision. Hopefully that will not take another 40 years.
Thank you all. The working name of my railroad will be the Buffalo, Windsor & Detroit RR, at least for now. Mr. Beasley’s post gave me a an idea albeit indirectly. The name Bedford is a likely substitute for the B in BW & D. Somewhere in my lineage the name Bedford played a prominent role. I remember as a kid going to many a Bedford family reunion. Also, one of my favorite movies is “It’s a Wonderfull Life” which was in Bedford Falls. So who knows …
Now, I need to develope a history of my Railroad. One on the founding members was a Ebeneezer Bedford ? That’s what i love about this hobby. Even though i haven’t actually started my little empire i can still have fun getting there.
Happy to hear on the final name. I went round and round with mine. Finally, I resorted to putting up a a poll with my selcetion of names. That was fun. And yeah, the histroy part is even better. Pretty much can make it as real, or as far out, as you want too. Keep us updated as you make progress
I like the name you picked, even though I thought Broke and Wasted was kinda catchy.
