the railroad I work for is in need of a new radiator for an EMD SW9. I wonder if any of you can help me out to get in touch with companies that are still selling these radiators at all ?
Not sure if this is the correct forum for question like this, if not, please let me know what I should do.
If you can help me with this, that would be great.
There are a few folks on this forum who might deal in railroad equipment.
One possiblity would be to try Google or a antoher search engine looking for parts. If that doesnt work or they are too much another idea ( Coming from a 4x4 fabricator expeirence background) , I would suggest to find out roughly what size the raditor is and see what others might work. Maybe something from industrail Cummins or a Catipillar deseil engine and fab new munts. Either way, best of luck
[#welcome] I would post this on the trains magazine forums on this website!! t is the one above this. There area lot of rairoaders that hang out over there.
You might try contacting EMC(EMD) and get a quote for a replacement. They maybe still able to have one made as they should still have the orginal specs.Another alternative woutd be to find an industrrial radiator company that will fabricate a replacement. Both will be expensive but cheaper than a replacement swicther. [2c]
I would try museums. My railroad has everythin from GP30’s to ALCO’s to FM’s but no SW9… If its for long term, i would buy it new, or slightly used casue it will save you in the long term.
Please contact me off-list Will, some forum members may get mad at you for interuppting their thread.
Anyway, Try Larry’s Truck ad Electric also, and other various scrapyards may be able to help you out.
BTW, I would try my “home” forum, which is titled railroads, and deals with only the full sized trains.
thanks for all of the replies. I have been offline for a bit, so I could not respond. With a bit of luck I’ll find one.
Chris, I work (volunteer) for the Coopersville & Marne railroad. Our main engine is an SW9, and yeah finding a replacement rediator is not the easiest thing to do . It’s been leaking for a while ( we have had to replace part of it several years ago) so we need to replace it, if possible during the winter break.
