Need a replacement knuckle coupler

Well, somehow the tender on my prized JLC 4-6-5 Hudson ended up on the floor, landing rear end first & the (plastic) coupler broke off the truck.

Can any one tell me where I can get a replacement? Or do I have to replace the whole truck? The truck is a 3 axle truck.

If you need the part number you can look it up on the Lionel website (www.lionel.com) under customer service they have a page containing all the parts lists and exploded diagrams from the 1970s until now. Your JLC hudson is the earlier 1980’s model the parts list and exploded diagram should be there.

If you have a local train store that does repairs, or deals in older equipment, they most likely have a stock of misc. old parts from units that were part of a buy out.

OK, I finally got around to downloading all of the parts supplement files from Lionel’s web site, and I looked up the sheets relavant to my Hudson. I even found a diagram of the 6-wheel truck on the tender that has the broken coupler.

Looking at the diagram, I see that the coupler is actually composed of about 5 parts. I thought it would be only one part.

Question 1: Is it worth trying to take my coupler apart & reuse the unbroken parts, or should I just order all of the parts for the coupler & put a new one together? Or do you know if they sell the coupler as an assembly?

Question 2: The coupler is held onto the truck by an 8960-52 Push On Nut. How am I supposed to get this thing off? Will I need to cut it off with a dremel tool & put a new one on?

Well, the questions I posted a few minutes ago are moot. In searching through the places listed in that article about parts suppliers, the only part I could find was the entire truck. So I’m replacing the whole thing. It was only $8.00 for the truck, plus 7% sales tax. Then there’s the $5.44 shipping charge; why can’t they just send it US mail & charge a couple of bucks.

Oh well. I should have the new truck in a few days & that will end that.
