Need a straight stack for an HO Bachmann Shay

Hello everyone,

I just bought a Bachmann Shay as an addition to the Chimney Rock Stone & Gravel Co. roster. Currently, the company is running a Keystone Locomotive Works 20-ton, Class A Shay, which is proving to be too light for all the loaded hoppers it has to push around. I’d like to maintain a family resemblance on the engines. You can contact me directly at alanmendeatyahoodotcom.

Here’s a photo of No. 1 before paint:

Kindest regards,

Alan Mende

Best place to start in a search for something like that is the Walthers catalogue, or their website. You might check with Roundhouse (Athearn) to see if they still sell the stacks separately to their steam locomotive kits.

I can’t help with the stack, but I wanted to swap a steel cab for a wooden cab, I made a post at the Bachmann forum and a gentleman gave me one for the cost of postage, you may try there if you haven’t already.

Congratulations on motorizing a Keystone Shay, it’s been my understanding that it is very difficult to do.

You’re right, the Keystone Shay is difficult to power even with the NWSL power kit. They made different versions of them, and I have the first one. Gear mesh adjustment on the trucks is critical, and when it runs, it sounds like a coffee grinder.

Search Walther’s for, super detaining parts, ho, stack, in the advanced search option.

I just looked at my PSC catalog and PSC has some straight stacks. Walther’s carries PSC parts.

Athearn/Roundhouse has very few parts. I have tried. If you want to try, go to ho seeker roundhouse page and look at the pdf documents I sent them for the new 4-4-0, 2-6-0, and 2-8-0. The documents show part numbers for the different stacks.

Click on the top center section, Engine diagrams/part numbers, scroll down and you will see, 2-6-0 2-8-0 4-4-0.

Good luck.

Precision Scale # 31446 look similar to yours. It is labeled, Old Style, Straight. The PSC catalog says it is 3 feet 10 inches high. Walther’s does not show the height of the stack.

There are some PSC tapered and double tapered that look similar.

You might consider ordering the PSC catalog as they have a lot of parts. I also order direct from PSC when Walther’s does not have the parts in stock.

Walther’s shows a Keystone Shotgun stack that looks similar. Part #395-25 in stock.
