Need help - Central of Georgia RR

Hi all. Can anybody direct me to a website or book that has a nice clean side shot of one of the C of G’s black and silver boxcars? It’s the one with the large oval design on the side. Lionel and Americn Flyer offered models of them in the 50’s and Athearn, Kadee, and Intermountain recently offered HO models of them. I need a picture of the real thing. Thanks for any help!

Greg

Methinks they were dark blue.

But I don’t have a photo, so can’t prove a thing.

They were black and silver.I remember seeing them when I was a little boy. I called them blimp cars because the silver oval looked like a blimp to me.

Greg,

The best side photo of the CofG boxcar “blimp” scheme I found is in Images of America Central of Georgia Railway book on page 108. Truck details are a little dark but is an otherwise decent photo. It should be easy to find since this book was reprinted this year.

Another photo is in Forrest Beckum’s and Al Langley"s Central of Georgia Album but this book is hard to find and the photo is 1/3 angle looking up and is small.

Model Railroader 11/92 page 176 has a Paint Shop article on the CofG Blimp boxcar. I don’t know if there are any photos with the article.

Hope this helps a little.

Jay

Thanks Jay! I really appreciate that.

CS, you might be thinking of the diesel locomotive paint for the C of G, since it had a dark blue in it - though the blue was closer to royal blue. Very nice paint on the locos. Fortunately, I was able to find a few pics of the locos in some old Trains issues. Now I’ll check out the sources Jay mentioned for the cars.

Happy 4th, y’all.

Greg
