A number of years ago, Cartens published a book containing plans for scratchbuilt structures and one of those was of John Allen’s famous enginehouse. I assume this book is now out of print since it isn’t listed on the Carstens website anymore. I can’t remember the name of this book but if I could find out what its was, I might find a copy on ebay or somewhere else. I’d appreciate any help you can give me regarding this book or if there is someplace else I could get the plans for that enginehouse.
Try Northeast Scale Models. They made a laser kit of the enginhouse a few years ago (maybe 10+). They may still have plans in house. The kit makes a very nice 2 track structure with enough room for a small & mid-size steamer. You could use one bay for a paint shop & the other as a repair facility.
MR may also have plans for the enginehouse.
Thanks for the info. I knew that Fine Scale Miniatures had made a limited run version many years ago but I don’t know that someone else had. I’ll check into it.
Do you mean the old wooden one with two stalls. It has monster windows in both sides and in the roof? I believe it is on page 34 in the book Easy-to-build Model Railroad Structures edited by Willard Anderson, originally published in 1958. It has been reprinted many times. There are many copies of this book out there on both Amazon and eBay. I see them from time to time for $1-$2 at swap meets and Train shows.
It was also on page 12 of HO Monthly April 1954, but I think that will be much harder to find.
According to the beginning of the article it is based on JA’s enginehouse, but is not exactly the same. RMC ran the original in Oct/Nov 1948. I don’t know that it was ever rerun.
Enjoy
Paul
Yes, that is the enginehouse I am talking about. Thanks for the information about the book. I couldn’t remember the name of the book so this will make it much easier to find a copy.
