Need Help Finding MR Back Issue Late 70's

Hi All

I need help finding an old issue of MR. I’m pretty sure it was from the late 70’s, it had a picture of John Olson’s Mescal Lines on the cover and an article on scratchbuilding a D&RGW narrow guage high side gondola inside. Anyone remember this issue? Anyone want to part with it?

I’ve suddenly got the itch to build one and need the plans.

Thanks, Tom

Tom.

Paul at RailPub will have the issue of MR you’re looking for.

Any chance August 1978 is the MR issue in question?

I have the August 1978 issue in front of me. There was an article starting on page 58 by Allen Brewster called “Denver & Rio Grande Western’s narrow-gauge gondolas”. It has multiple prototype photos as well as drawings of two different gons, numbers 1423 and 1646. The drawings are S scale. There is also an article by Fred Hamilton about scratchbuilding an On3 model of the 1423 car using mainly styrene.

However, the cover is not of the Mescal lines. The cover photo was a lead in to an article by J. C. Myer and the Sunday Night Coolies and was about building a bridge and a viaduct across a place they called “coolie canyon”.

I seem to recall that there was a controversy because some readers took offense to the use of the word “coolie”.

Ah, I guess my memory was combining 2 different issues. Looks like Aug 78 is the one I am looking for. Anyways, I found the entire year of 1978 on eBay, so I’m bidding on that now.

Thanks for your help,

Tom

By the way the February 1961 issue of MR also featured a prototype drawing and construction article about a D&RGW narrow gauge gondola (06299) by Al Kamm, at the time one of the hobbies finest craftsmen.
