Im building my first HO scale layout in the modern era and have 2 industries I would like to use. I want use a brewery and a refrigerated warehouse. I could use some help with what type of freight cars and for what purpose I could use for the brewery. I also need some help locating modern day reefer freight cars. Any ideas?
You could have 3 bay covered hoppers (about 4500 cubic feet plus or minus a couple of hundred cubic feet capacity). I seem to recall seeing corn syrup tankcars (17,000 to 19,000 gallons; Atlas, Intermountain, and Walthers) at one brewery. The beer used to be shipped out by RBLs (Railshop, ExactRail, Athearn RTR, Atlas), but later it seems most of it is shipped out in uninsulated boxcars. I saw many TBOX boxcars at the brewery in Fairfield, CA when I was there about a 1-1/2 years ago.
The only modern reefers that are made are the 57’ PCF cars made by Athearn and Intermountain. Red Caboose and Con-Cor make a models of one that is similar to some that are still in use today. If you can find an old Walthers Arcticar, you can use that at the refrigerated warehouse.
Exactrail is advertising the 62’ PCF beer cars in Santa Fe, BN and a few others. Those cars were/are in service at Coors in Golden Co last I heard. I also have some of the same type of car from earlier models by Eel River, which I don’t believe is around anymore, but could probably be found on the “used car market”.
