Need help mounting coupler box on roundhouse rs-3

I bought a roundhouse rs-3 from evil bay, it came with all the pieces except for lenses. I am to the point of mounting couplers and their coupler box does not fit nor does a kadee box fit. Any suggestions on how to mount a coupler.

Thanks Mike

Mike, I you give us a few more details of what in particular does not fit when using a Kadee coupler in the MDC/Roundhouse box we may be able to give you some help. We converted one of these locos long ago and simply used a #5 coupler in the MDC box. MDC was usually pretty good about making their boxes fit a Kadee coupler. Contact me directly at mail@kadee.com and I may be able to help a bit more.

Ok I guess I was a little vauge on this. The issue is not the kadee coupler or the spring mech. The issue I am having is the stock coupler box does not fit in the alloted space nor does a kadee box fit in the alloted space. My question was how others have mounted the box(whichever one). I have tapped the hole in the frame for the screw to hold it in place but on the plastic step area on the front where the coupler box and coupler would come through is too small. I looked into reaming this area open but then I would lose the overhang detail for the box molded into the plastic. I would show you a pic of where I mean but alas I am out of town flying again for another 3 days so my first attempt at posting a pic might be IF I am lucky is friday.

I have one of the old Roundhouse (MDC) RS-3’s. It has a drive very similar to an Athearn. The coupler boxes on it are similar to those used by Bachmann. I had no problem mounting Kadee #5’s in the existing boxes.

These coupler boxes are seperate from frame. It is kind of a pain to get the box to stay still while you screw it down. Now once it is screwed down and you try to put the walk way down the walkway gets pushed up at the end because the coupler box does not fit the molded in hole in the walkway framing.

There are no issues with kadee #5 couplers fitting in the box it is the box fitting in its alloted spacing where I would have to shave the opening and lose the detail.

Never mind I cut off the detail and mounted the coupler box. All done!
