I need to rewire my 282 because the original wires (5 way) dried out and are shorting. Can anyone provide me a wiring diagram for the 282? Is there one in the CTT article in the Feb 2000 volume on p. 130?

Complete Service Manual for Lionel Trains is the operation & repair pages for the crane. This is what you need to fix and run your crane. I cannot send you this via email(I have not mastered the scanner yet) I can photocopy them for you or you are better off buying the book or the Greenburg repair book. Both are worth the money if you run Post-War Lionel. Hope this helps!
