I have a relatively new Kato SD40 (approx 3 yrs old but unused). I removed the shell to paint and weather some of the parts and now it will not run. The loco runs fine without the shell but will not run with the shell on. I’m assuming something is creating a ground somewhere but I can’t see where that ground might be. Any suggestions?
Many thanks! TSS
Put a piece of tape on the weight that is mounted on the top of the shell. This has a habbit of touching the pickups or the decoder and shorting the loco out. I have GP35s and a SD40 that have the same problem. One piece of electrical tape is all I need to fix this.
Thanks for the advice about the electrical tape. I’ll give it a shot!

did that help your loco out any? Lemme know please.
I took your advice and applied a piece of electrical tape over the metal pieces on the shell and everything seems to be working just fine! Thanks again for the tip.
