need help with a Rivarossi Challenger 4-6-6-4 rio grand

I purchased 2 used Rivarossi steam locomotives. one works the other the challenger 4-6-6-4 rio grand does not i need information to fix it. how to take it a part and where are the electical pick ups for it. I plan on giving both of them to my girl freinds 12 year old son. Model rasilroading is new to me its his hobby. we are working on his layout adding track and buildinging.

You may also want to do a search on upgrading to a can motor. Those old clunkers sound like coffe grinders going around your layout and thats when they run great. I know I have at least a dozen or so. I purchased a few with can motors already installed and there is a night and day difference. Micro locomotion(the last link) is the place to use in my O/P Generally all they need is a good cleaning and lubrication but even at best you get poor performance compared to today’s standard of locomotive.

Are your Challengers older models, with the motor in the cab and large flanges? Or are they newer, with the motor in the boiler and small flanges?
