need help with american flyer 303

i recently purchased an american flyer set --all previous were postwar lionel. the motor armature has approx 3/16" movement back and forth as motor tries to change direction .am i missing a ball bearing that may be in the brush cap socket or ??? part number ?? where can i find af replacement parts ??? thanks for any help --frank

There is some movement in all Flyer motors but not 3/16" of an inch. That is too much. On the end of the armature with the worm gear there should be a small washer or two. If they are missing than you will have two much play in the motor. You can get these parts from Doug Peck at Port Line hobbies if they are missing from your motor. But first I would run the engine both forwards and in reverse to see if it runs okay.

It sounds like you may be missing a spacer washer, part #PA10766 on the gear end of the armature. Port Lines Hobbies and RFG have the part you need.

Thoroughly clean and lubricate the loco before putting it into service.
